Roots and Vegetables

Open to individuals 14 years of age and under. Membership is necessary for these entries, however NO Membership Fee will be charged.

Section

  1. Special – Collection of Vegetables displayed in a suitable container. Theme: “Scarecrow Junction” (accessories allowed)
  2. 1 Squash, Named
  3. Most Unusual Vegetable
  4. Largest Tomato
  5. 2 Pumpkins
  6. Largest Sunflower Head
  7. 2 Tomatoes, any variety
  8. Carved pumpkin (pumpkin can be purchased)
  9. Special: Decorated Pumpkin (pumpkin can be purchased)
  10. Special: Largest pumpkin or squash (to be weighed).

Horticulture

  1. Make a scarecrow using all parts of an ear of corn including the stalk, not over 18 inches tall, accessories allowed.
  2. “I like scarecrows”, an arrangement of flowers around a scarecrow.
  3. Arrangement of flowers in a coffee mug.
  4. “Save the environment” an arrangement in a recycled containers
  5. “Solo” Design using one bloom and foliage

YOUTH BAKING – JUNIOR LEVEL

Open to individuals 9 years of age and under. Entries must be the work of the Exhibitor. Membership is necessary for these entries, however no Membership Fee will be charged. Age of the Exhibitor is to be marked on entry tag.

  1. Rice Krispie Square mixture formed into an interesting shape, not larger than 15 cm x 15 cm x 15 cm, judged on appearance only
  2. Decorated Cupcakes (3), can be made from a cake mix
  3. One large cookie, decorated for Halloween, no larger than 21 cm
  4. Chocolate Chip Cookies (3)
  5. Peanut Butter Cookies (3)
  6. NEW – Homemade Trail Mix – to be displayed in a 500 ml jar

YOUTH BAKING – INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
Open to individuals 10 to 14 years of age. Entries must be the work of the Exhibitor. Membership is necessary for these entries, however no Membership Fee will be charged. Age of Exhibitor is to be marked on entry tag.

  1. OAAS Special – Plain Chocolate Chip Cookies – no nuts (3)
    Rules for OAAS Special (#54)
  • Contest is open to youth up to age 14 years
  • Number of cookies to be shown at local Fair/Exhibition to be determined by each individual Fair/Exhibition District Competition:
  • The winner from each Fair/Exhibition will be eligible to enter at the District Competition
  • District entry must consist of 8 cookies displayed on a firm, disposable plate.
  • Plain chocolate chip cookies, with no nuts, must be no larger than 3″ (6.75 cm) and no smaller than 2″ (5 cm).
  • Prize money to be paid by the District.
  • Provincial Competition:
  • The entrant must be the winner from the District Competition.
  • In the case where the district winner is unable to send an entry to the convention, then the 2nd place District winner will be eligible to enter.
  • The entry for the District must consist of 8 cookies displayed on a plate provided by the OAAS Chocolate Chip Cookie Committee.
  • Plain Chocolate Chip Cookies, with no nuts are to be no larger than 3″ (6.75 cm) and no smaller than 2″ (5 cm).
  • The entry must be tagged with the exhibitor’s name, address and District represented using the entry tag provided.
  • Cookies will be judged according to the OAAS Homecraft Judging Standards.
  • Provincial Prize Money: 1st – $20.00 2nd – $15.00 3rd – $10.00 with 12 prizes of $5.00
  1. “My Favourite Muffin” (3) – VARIETY OF MUFFIN MUST BE NAMED AND THAT NAME MUST BE PRINTED ON ENTRY TAG
  2. Chocolate Cupcakes (3) , decorated for Thanksgiving, judged on taste and decoration
  3. NEW – Homemade Party Mix (eg: Nuts & Bolts) – to be displayed in a 1L jar decorated as a gift, with recipe attached.
  4. NEW – Cupcakes baked in an ice cream cone, decorated and displayed appropriately (3) – judged on appearance only (for ideas and inspiration a computer search of “cupcakes baked in ice cream cones” is helpful)

NEW: Brant County 4-H Produce & Canning Club – Open to 4H members only.
Membership is necessary for these entries. Members 14 years of age & under are required to have a valid 2016 Burford Agricultural Society Membership, however no membership fee will be charged. Members 15 years of age & over will be required to pay an $8.00 membership fee. **Jars must be either 250ml or 500ml in size**

Early Years – 4 and under
Membership is necessary for these entries, however NO Membership Fee will be charged. This section will not be judged, all names will go in a draw for a prize donated by Kevin and Deb Hodge. All participants will get a sticker

  1. Colour the picture located in the middle of the Prize book using your choice of pencil crayon, crayon, or marker
  2. Finger Painting
  3. Collage – Artists choice
  4. Pasta picture in “Scarecrow Junction” theme

Primary – ages 5 to 7
Membership is necessary for these entries, however NO MEMBERSHIP FEE will be charged.

  1. Make a “Scarecrow Junction” picture using dried seeds or beans on paper
  2. Draw a picture of your family using pencil and/or pencil crayon
  3. Paint a picture of your favourite thing
  4. Any medium – subject “Scarecrow Junction”
  5. Sculpture from Lego or other building blocks subject “Scarecrow Junction”

Junior – ages 8 to 10
Membership is necessary for these entries, however NO MEMBERSHIP FEE will be charged.

  1. Painting – Artist choice
  2. Fabric collage – subject “Scarecrow Junction” landscape using fabrics on board or canvas
  3. Pencil sketch – Artist Choice
  4. Any medium – subject “Scarecrow Junction”
  5. Create a picture with dried seeds or beans – subject “Scarecrow Junction”
  6. Sculpture using Lego or other building materials of a barnyard at “Scarecrow Junction”

Intermediate – ages 11-13
Membership is necessary for these entries, however NO MEMBERSHIP FEE will be charged.

  1. Painting – Artist choice
  2. My favourite farm animal – artists choice, any material
  3. Collage using recycled materials. No larger than 11”x17”
  4. Any medium – subject “Scarecrow Junction”
  5. Pencil sketch – Artist choice

Senior – ages 14-17
Membership is necessary for these entries, however NO MEMBERSHIP FEE will be charged.

  1. Painting in graffiti style – Artists choice of medium
  2. Black and White art piece – Artist choice of medium
  3. Grid art – drawing from a picture (magazine or photo), original picture must be attached.
  4. Any medium – subject “Scarecrow Junction”
  5. Computer generated art piece
  6. Sculpture using metal such as wire, washers or recycled components
